What Is Knob & Tube Wiring?

Knob and tube wiring was the standard method of residential electrical installation from the 1880s through the 1940s, with some installations continuing into the early 1950s. The system routes individual single-insulated copper conductors through open air inside walls and framing cavities, supported by ceramic knobs nailed into studs and joists. Where wires pass through framing members, porcelain tubes protect them from abrasion.

Unlike modern wiring, which groups conductors in sheathed cable, knob and tube runs a single hot wire and a single neutral wire separately, with no ground wire.
